Meet Ryan Schulze: SMPS Idaho Member and Director of Sales and Marketing at Business Interiors of Idaho. Ryan is not only a marketing guru, but also one of the kindest people you'll meet. Take a look at what he had to say to the SMPS Idaho community.
SMPS Idaho: Tell me about yourself and your current role.
Ryan Schulze: My name is Ryan Schulze, and I’m the Director of Sales & Marketing for BII, a commercial furniture dealer. As far as work goes, my role encompasses everything on the front end of our customer process, from business development to find out about projects, marketing to engage current customers and attract new ones, sales to win opportunities, and account management to design, specific, and order FF&E packages. Outside of work, I am a husband to an amazing counselor whose family is from Boise originally as well as a father to a fiery 2-year old daughter. I love getting outdoors to raft, hike, or ski, love watching and playing sports, and love having a board game night with friends.
SMPS Idaho: What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Ryan Schulze: More life advice than specifically career advice, but a past mentor once asked me the rhetorical question, “What does your day say about you?” The scenario behind the question: what if there was a fly on the wall observing you for one day who was then asked to describe you. All the fly had to go on was what they saw that specific day, nothing more. Would they have witnessed you being kind / compassionate toward others or being aggressive / stand-offish toward others? Would they have seen you working productively during the work day or just getting through the work day by procrastinating? Would they have seen you connecting with friends and family over a meal or sitting alone all night watching Netflix? The punchline is that the minutes of your day add up to who you are that day, and who you are each day adds up to who you are in life. I wrote this question down on a contractor’s pencil and have had it on my desk for nearly a decade as a reminder of the worth and importance of today. (see cover photo)
SMPS Idaho: Why did you become a member of SMPS?
Ryan Schulze: I originally joined SMPS as part of the Southeast Louisiana chapter when I was doing marketing for a heavy civil contractor named Boh Bros. in New Orleans. I was a part of their chapter for more than two years prior to moving to Idaho. When I moved here, I joined ESI Construction’s marketing team with the expectation of joining the local SMPS chapter, only to find out there wasn’t one! Years later, I was excited to hear of the formation of one in town in order to have a community of like-minded, intra-industry individuals to connect with and learn from.
