When it comes to marketing professional services, the services themselves naturally take center stage. It’s the duty of a good marketer to bring those services – and the teams that provide them – to the attention of both the clients and the public at large. Many of these services are duly recognized for the good they’re able to provide to their communities, with recognized weeks like National Engineers Week and National Surveyors Week already on America’s national calendars. Perhaps it’s a sign that marketers are doing their jobs well that these positions are recognized so positively, even if the marketers themselves aren’t often recognized for those efforts.
Luckily for marketing professionals everywhere, March 20, 2023 brings with it a new national day of recognition: National Marketing Day, established into the National Day Archives last February thanks to the efforts of Julie Crosslin, Ardurra Group, Inc.’s Regional Marketing Lead for the southeast United States.
“It felt like an oversight that we had no Marketing Day,” Crosslin said, referring to the various days and weeks that celebrate the industries AEC marketing professionals support. “I wanted to create a day where we pause to recognize all that our Marketing team contributes – too often we bounce from one deadline to the next without stopping to celebrate the value Marketing can bring – and educate the rest of the company about what Marketing does. If you’re not a Project Manager, Principal, or Client Services Manager, you might not interact with Marketing frequently. A holiday is a cause for celebration, but also education.”
As described on the National Marketing Day page of National Day Archives, the day recognizes marketing professionals for their critical role in representing their companies, praising both their creativity and business related aptitudes to meet help their companies meet the needs of their clients.
Crosslin completed the application for the day’s recognition, a process that included drafting an explanation for why the day should be honored as well as how it could potentially be celebrated. In doing so, Crosslin reflected on the traits that make marketers unique in their fields of business.
“I’m always in awe of the way Marketers want all the data, logic, and analytics, while also placing high value on creativity, storytelling, and visuals,” she said. “Most people are logical or artistic. Analytical or imaginative. A Marketer’s superpower is that we are all of those things combined. Applying for the holiday helped me fully realize that narrative.”
So, now that the day is on the calendar, how should marketers be celebrating? Crosslin suggests group lunches, gifts and notes of appreciation, but encourages every individual team to celebrate in any way that best helps them feel valued. For non-marketers, she suggests it could be used as an opportunity for non-marketing staff to reach out and offer gratitude for the collaboration marketing presents.
“Internally, my goal is for Marketers to feel completely supported and valued every day, but especially on National Marketing Day!” Crosslin said.
